MOSES LAKE — It has been an interesting few months for the new president of the Lioness Club of Moses Lake, Frogg McMain. She took the helm in June.
Events and fundraising opportunities have been limited without the Grant County Fair this summer. But, McMain said, the club remains committed to finding ways to continue to provide for and assist the community.
The fair is one of the main events for the Lioness Club in a normal year. The success of the recent Spaceburgers event in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin and the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation was a bright spot, she said.
“It was very successful, everyone came together to make it work very well,” McMain said. “It seemed to me that anyone who had to wait was patient and happy as far as I know. It was set up incredibly smoothly and was a really well-oiled machine for a first-time job.”
She said she hasn’t had a chance to meet with other members of the club to discuss ideas for future plans since the Spaceburgers event but is hopeful they’ll have similar opportunities in the near future.
The club is committed to keep going this year on the scholarships for local seniors the club supports. Outside of that, McMain said, the club is still discussing what future plans might look like.
“I look forward to finding other ways to financially support our community,” McMain said. “Again, we all look forward to whatever’s going to be ‘normal’ and going back in that direction.”
Being president of anything for the first time comes with its own challenges. McMain said she has held a lot of titles with clubs over the years, including treasurer and secretary, but never president. Stepping into that role with the Lioness Club, she said, she just felt strongly about taking the chance to lead and propel the club in the right direction to do the most for the community.
McMain said she had worked at the Grant County Fair for two or three years before being asked to join the Lioness Club. A lifelong passion for helping the community led her toward wanting to become a member.
“For me personally, it fills my cup,” McMain said. “I guess I’m somebody who feels the need to serve other people. I don’t mean that too literally, but if I can make something better for you, I will step forward and help you out. If that makes your world better, I will help.”
McMain enters her 24th year working for the Moses Lake School District this year and said being around children has helped her understand a lot about the needs of the community as a whole.
Moving forward, while much of the club’s focus lies with helping younger people through programs and events, making things better for the community as a whole remains the priority for the Lioness Club.
The Lioness Club meets at the Boys & Girls Club building on Paxson Drive on the third Monday of every month.
