MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake High School recently launched a Campus Learning Center on its campus once a week for students to come in for tutoring and academic support.

The Campus Learning Center is currently available on Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. in the commons area of the high school. Yesterday marked the second week for the new program after it kicked off on Oct. 7.

Buses are going out to neighborhoods to pick up students on Wednesdays, with the learning center available to both digital and on-campus students. MLHS Principal Triscia Hochstatter said there are currently about 90 individual tables set up to accommodate students.

Between 40 and 50 students came on campus yesterday to the Campus Learning Center. The program came about after a parent survey to find out what sort of support they wanted to see.

“There were quite a few parents that said it would be nice to have a place for students to go to receive some tutoring,” Hochstatter said. “Some parents said it would just be nice to go and just work on their remote work, have a quiet spot to do that where they have reliable internet, so a variety of different reasons.”

Staff members are on hand to offer students tutoring or assistance individually. A lot of students have come in just to have a place to get their work done, Hochstatter said. She said it is nice to know there is help available if they needed it, though.

The learning center has been used for fall testing as well, and some teachers have used the new area as a means to get some students together in small groups. Hochstatter said she would like to see the program expand in the future, possibly offering different times for the Campus Learning Center to be available.

Hochstatter said she sees the program continuing on even after students return to in-person learning. Wednesdays will remain student-free in order to get cleaning done in classrooms.

“I’d love to see teachers utilizing different times to bring small groups in, I’d like to see opportunities for our English learners to come in,” she said. “The sky’s the limit. Well, I guess space is the limit.”
