COLUMBIA FALLS — Frenchtown quarterback Wyatt Hayes hit Tel Arthur with his fourth touchdown pass with 3:00 left Friday to lead the Broncs past Columbia Falls 28-21 in a key Western A football game.
Hayes completed 16 of 30 passes for 312 yards for the Broncs (6-2), who trailed 21-7 after Isaiah Roth’s third touchdown run for Columbia Falls (5-3) which covered 52 yards in the second quarter.
Frenchtown was able to get a TD right before halftime – a 17-yard pass from Hayes to Brandon Finley – to gain some momentum, and then completed the comeback in the fourth quarter.
Finley, who caught a 79-yard scoring pass in the first quarter, had five catches for 184 yards. Hayes’ third TD pass covered 27 yards to Devon Shelton, and his PAT pass to Finley tied the game at 21-all.
After Arthur scored the go-ahead touchdown Columbia Falls lost possession on four downs.
Roth had a huge game for the Wildcats, with 21 carries for 155 yards. His other scoring runs covered 1 and 5 yards. Mason Peters completed 15 of 19 passes for 102 yards and ran 15 times for 62 yards for Columbia Falls, which was outgained 403-302.
The loss leaves Columbia Falls hoping a 6-3 record gets the league’s fourth playoff spot. Libby, which lost 35-14 to Hamilton Friday, Whitefish, Polson, the Wildcats and Frenchtown could all potentially end up with three losses and tied for the third and fourth spots.
Libby is at Frenchtown next Friday, while Columbia Falls travels to Butte Central and Whitefish plays host to Dillon.
