OTHELLO — The Othello City Council passed a new solid waste ordinance during a virtual meeting on Monday, Oct. 12. The ordinance updates the current ordinance that is set to expire at the end of the year.
“We decided to raise rates 1 percent,” said Spencer Williams, finance officer for the city of Othello. “It is a relatively low increase. It’s 20 cents a month. This will allow the city to explore expanded service.”
According to Othello council member Corey Everett, the increase will bring in between $90,000 and $100,000 a year. Everett said that the Solid Waste Committee has talked about starting a recycling program.
“It needs to go into effect this year,” Everett said. “We need to start on something.”
Mayor Shawn Logan said that the use of the money will be discussed further in committee before any final decisions are made.
