EPHRATA — A Warden man was sentenced to 14 months in prison last week after pleading guilty to charges related to a September assault in which he attempted to stab a man in the face.

David Cantu III, 29, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. In addition to his prison sentence, he was sentenced to 18 months of community custody.

Officers responded to a call in the 800 block of Weaver Road in Warden around 3 p.m. on Sept. 26 for a report that Cantu had pulled out a hunting knife and lunged at a man during an argument, according to the police report. Witnesses told police that the victim, Pedro Dana Martinez, had driven up next to Cantu and begun accusing him of stealing his phone.

The two men reportedly began shoving each other, and when Martinez began to walk away Cantu attempted to stab him in the face but missed, then hit Martinez in the chin, according to court documents. Martinez managed to get back into his vehicle and leave the scene before calling police.

When officers arrived, they reportedly saw Cantu throw the knife and begin to run away. Cantu was apprehended down the street after a brief foot chase, according to the police report.
