UPCOMING:
SUPREME COURT-THOMAS’ WIFE: The wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is using her Facebook page to amplify unsubstantiated claims of corruption by Joe Biden. UPCOMING: 750 words, photos by 4 p.m.
ELECTION 2020-BIDEN -CORONAVIRUS: If Joe Biden wins the election, he’s vowing to combat the coronavirus from the earliest moments of his presidential transition. He’d seek advice from Dr. Anthony Fauci, work with governors and local officials to institute a nationwide mask-wearing mandate, and push for a sweeping spending bill to address the crisis. Yet those measures may fall short of the type of national pandemic response some scientists and political observers say may be the only way to contain the virus. UPCOMING: 990 words, photos by 5 p.m.
ELECTION 2020 - MELANIA TRUMP: First lady Melania Trump ventures out on her first solo campaign appearance of the 2020 race, making an appearance in all-important Pennsylvania. UPCOMING: 650 words, photos by 6 p.m.
SENT/DEVELOPING:
ELECTION 2020: A week until Election Day, Joe Biden goes on offense in Georgia — which hasn’t backed a Democrat for president since 1992 — and pushes into other territory where President Donald Trump was once expected to easily repeat his wins from four years ago. SENT: 920 words, photos. Will be updated from afternoon Trump rallies in Michigan and Wisconsin, an evening appearance in Nebraska, and Biden's afternoon Georgia appearances.
ELECTION 2020-MIDWEST VIRUS: The coronavirus is getting worse in states that President Trump needs the most. The upper Midwest is bearing much of the brunt of new infections surging across the U.S. That includes Wisconsin, where Trump is fighting to catch Biden in a state Trump narrowly won in 2016. Also seeing a surge is Iowa, where Trump is now in a toss-up race with Biden after carrying the state by 9.4 percentage points four years ago. SENT: 896 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020-SENATE-ALABAMA: Alabama Sen. Doug Jones, considered the most endangered Democrat in the U.S. Senate, is facing former football coach Tommy Tuberville whose message has been heavy on support for Trump. The race will test whether Democrats can make inroads in the Deep South and if Jones’ 2017 win was a fluke or a sign that Democrats can win in areas once thought impossible. SENT: 980 words, photos.
MUSICIANS-VS-TRUMP: The presidential campaign season has brought an unprecedented onslaught of angry musicians who say Trump can’t always get what he wants. Dozens of artists who object to Trump and his message have demanded that he stop playing their songs at his rallies. SENT: 965 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020-SENATE-MAINE: Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine is back on the campaign trail after another controversial vote on another of President Trump’s Supreme Court nominees. Her vote in favor of Brett Kavanaugh rallied Democrats against her and angered some moderate supporters, while her vote against Amy Coney Barrett may not do much to win them back. SENT: 1100 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020 -WISCONSIN: Democrats and Republicans in the battleground state of Wisconsin were pushing Tuesday to get 320,000 outstanding absentee ballots returned by the close of polls on Election Day after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to extend the deadline to receive and count ballots, as Democrats had wanted. SENT: 900 words, photos.
EELECTION 2020 -EARLY VOTING: More than 21 million voters across the U.S. have already taken advantage of in-person voting amid record-breaking early turnout. But that option isn’t available to everyone, raising concerns about heavy crowds in several states on Nov. 3 amid a renewed spread of the coronavirus. SENT: 875 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020 -NATIVE -AMERICAN -VOTING: Native American voting advocates say the slow-moving nature of mail on large reservations puts the people who live there at a disadvantage to getting their votes counted. They have launched a series of legal challenges in several states to gain accommodations for reservation voters, but with the election only days away, they are pressing people to figure out how to get their ballot counted as the coronavirus upends life in Native American communities. SENT: 1050 words, photos.
REL-ELECTION 2020 -POLITICS IN THE PULPIT: Both President Trump and Joe Biden have been endorsed by faith leaders. But for clergy members who try to tackle thorny moral matters without overtly backing a candidate, the campaign has tested their ability to reconcile religious values and politics. SENT: 935 words, photos.
RELIGION -ELECTION - PROTECTION - PUSH: More than 1,000 clergy members and other faith-based advocates have signed onto a unique statement that supports a comprehensive path to “a free and fair election” and urges leaders to heed the verdict of “legitimate election results” regardless of who wins in November. SENT: 430 words, photos.
CONGRESS-SOCIAL MEDIA CEOS: The CEOs of Twitter, Facebook and Google are set to face a grilling by Republican senators lobbing accusations of anti-conservative bias on their platforms less than a week before Election Day. Democrats are trying to bend the Wednesday’s discussion beyond alleged censorship of conservative viewpoints to issues such as giant tech companies’ heavy impact on local news. SENT: 855 words, photos.
