The Montana Department of Transportation and contractor ACME Concrete on Monday completed a concrete preservation project in downtown Kalispell that began in mid-July.

This undertaking rehabilitated 1.6 miles of concrete on Main Street, between Sixth Street and Washington Street, and on Idaho Street between Meridian Road and Seventh Avenue East North.

The project was part of MDT’s “pavement preservation” initiative, through which crews perform preventative maintenance in order to extend the life of roads with minimal investment and disruptions.

The project in downtown Kalispell began with concrete panel replacements and panel demo sawing, a process in which crews sawed the pavement into smaller sections. After that, crews filled cracks and imperfections in the roadway with a mix of existing concrete and a fine aggregate material. This mix was then hardened and ground down to create a smooth, level driving surface. Along with these concrete repairs, crews sealed roadway joints and cracks, upgraded signage, added new pavement markings and adjusted manholes as needed.

Any inquiries about this project completion or the nature of this pavement preservation work can be directed to the project hotline at 406-207-4484 or go to https://www.mdt.mt.gov/pubinvolve/kalispellurban/.
