UPCOMING:

ELECTION 2020:-TRUMP'S RALLIES: There are no crowds at Disneyland, still shut down by the coronavirus. There were far fewer fans at World Series games this year than at any time in the past century. Big concerts are canceled. It’s a different story in Trump land. Day in and day out, thousands of supporters cram together at campaign rallies around the country where masks and social distancing are optional. UPCOMING: 1100 words, photos by 4 p.m.

TRUMP-CAMPAIGN-CABINET: Members of President Trump’s Cabinet are logging extra miles as campaign surrogates in states crucial to his reelection in the final days of the campaign, blending politics and policy in ways that critics say skirt, and may even violate, the law. UPCOMING: 750 words, photos by 4 p.m.

KAMALA HARRIS-MISINFORMATION :Before she was named the Democratic vice presidential nominee, Kamala Harris was smeared in online misinformation campaigns that falsely claimed she was ineligible to serve in the White House. Now, new data show that throughout the campaign Harris has been targeted on social media with sexist comments and more misinformation than white males who have run for the same job. UPCOMING: 500 words, photos by 5 p.m.

SENT/DEVELOPING:

ELECTION 2020: President Trump and Joe Biden chase votes in Florida, a state all but essential to the Republican’s pathway to another term as both nominees turn their focus to encouraging voters to turn out on Election Day. Trump postponed a Thursday night rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina, for a few days as Tropical Storm Zeta bears down on the Northeast. SENT: 1100 words, photos. Will be updated with campaign developments throughout the day.

ELECTION 2020-TRUMP-APOCALYPSE: The suburbs wouldn’t be the suburbs anymore, the economy would sink into its worst depression ever and police departments would cease to exist. Even America’s older adults would be left to figure out how to get by without heat, air conditioning or electricity. This is the apocalyptic version of American life that President Trump argues would be the dire consequence of turning over the White House to Democrat Joe Biden. SENT: 940 words, photos.

ELECTION 2020-LAWSUITS: In the most litigious presidential election in memory, court fights are even happening over where poll watchers may stand as the votes are tallied. Lawsuits by the hundreds already have been filed — with the prospect of many more before and after Tuesday’s voting — as both Democrats and Republicans try to settle in court a process that is usually determined by citizens simply casting ballots. SENT: 997 words, photos.

SUPREME COURT-ELECTION LITIGATION: Acting in lawsuits involving absentee ballot deadlines in three battleground states, the Supreme Court has allowed extensions for ballots in North Carolina and Pennsylvania to remain in place, but refused a plea for a relaxed deadline in Wisconsin. At first blush, the different outcomes at the Supreme Court seems odd because the high court typically takes up issues to harmonize the rules across the country. But elections are largely governed by states, and the rules differ from one state to the next. SENT: 980 words, photos.

ELECTION 2020-GET OUT THE VOTE: In the best of times, it’s a massive logistical challenge to get millions out to vote. In 2020, the difficulty has been dramatically compounded: by fear of the coronavirus, by complications and confusion over mail-in ballots, by palpable anxiety over the bitter divisions in the country. As early voting has surged dramatically, advocates have been mobilizing in myriad ways, from volunteer letter-writers to block associations, from college marching bands to lone violinists, from fleets of minivans to bicycle parades. SENT: 1520 words, photos.

ELECTION 2020-POLICE SHOOTING: The fatal shooting of another Black man on America’s streets by police — with subsequent unrest — has brought the fraught issues of policing and racism in the nation back to the fore of the presidential election in its closing days. SENT: 940 words, photo.

ELECTION 2020-BALLOTING IN FLORIDA: Even if the presidential election hinges on a Florida recount like 20 years ago, hanging chads and butterfly ballots won’t be around to trip up voters and officials — changes to ballots, equipment and laws have made the Bush-Gore circus a relic never to be revisited, state elections officials believe. SENT:980 words, photos.

ELECTION 2020- DEEP-SOUTH: In the battle for control of the U.S. Senate this year, the Deep South is fielding more Black candidates than it has since Reconstruction. SENT: 1000 words, photos.

ELECTION 2020 -MINNESOTA-VOTING: The union that represents Minneapolis police officers is trying to recruit former cops to work as “poll challengers” to work in “problem” areas at the request of an attorney connected to Trump’s campaign, sparking a backlash from city and state officials who say the move is aimed at intimidating voters. SENT: 600 words.

ELECTION 2020-IRAN-ANALYSIS: Top officials in Iran say the upcoming U.S. election doesn’t matter, but nearly everyone else there seems to be holding their breath. The race for the White House could mean another four years of President Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign of crippling sanctions. Or it could bring Joe Biden, who has raised the possibility of the U.S. returning to Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. SENT: 1070 words, photos.

ELECTION 2020-PELOSI-AGENDA: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is preparing a 2021 legislative agenda with two “great, big initiatives” — expanding health care access and rebuilding American infrastructure — that are longtime Democratic priorities aligned with Joe Biden’s platform. Both are taking on fresh urgency in the COVID-19 crisis. SENT: 740 words, photos.

VIRUS OUTBREAK-AD CAMPAIGN: Public relations firms hired by the Department of Health and Human Services vetted political views of hundreds of celebrities for a planned $250 million ad blitz aimed at portraying President Trump’s response to the coronavirus outbreak in a positive light, according to House documents. A political appointee at the department suggested creating a government-funded campaign to rival the World War II icon Rosie the Riveter. SENT: 937 words, photo.
