MOSES LAKE — Two Western Washington men driving off-road vehicles died near Moses Lake on Saturday after they collided on Sand Dune Road Southeast about one mile west of Potato Hill Road, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday evening.
Alexander Benefiel, 23, of Lake Stevens, and Rick Peak, 54, of Snohomish, were declared dead at the scene after they collided head-on at high speed at a slight bend in the road, according to law enforcement. Both drivers were ejected from their vehicles.
Bystanders and sheriff’s deputies attempted to perform CPR on both riders, who were found unconscious and not breathing. An air ambulance was deployed, but both riders were confirmed deceased at the scene, law enforcement wrote Tuesday.
“Please join us in sending comforting condolences to the surviving families,” Sheriff Tom Jones said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to them. Our sincerest appreciation to the good Samaritans who tried to help. Thank you for your response and may healing prayers come to you as well.”
Both riders were wearing helmets at the time of the collision, and it is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the collision, according to law enforcement. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office Motor Traffic Unit is investigating the collision.
