U.S. Forest Service officials say the Callahan Fire has grown to 400 acres as of Sept. 12.

The fire is burning in an old burn scar in the South Callahan Drainage approximately nine air miles from Troy. Firefighters are experiencing ground fire with group torching and flame lengths of eight to 10 feet. Officials said the fire is moving in a northern direction.

The fire was able to grow on Sept. 11 due to spotting and warm and dry conditions. Ground crews are receiving support from aerial resources including single engine air tankers and bucket operations. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

South Fork Callahan Creek Road, Goat Creek Road, Smith Mountain Road and Glad Creek Road remain closed. Caribou Creek Trail, South Fork Callahan Trail, Smith Mountain Trail and Smith Lake Trail are also still closed.
