POST FALLS — A Post Falls woman remains hospitalized and a fundraiser is underway to help her family.
Jackie Waterman was involved in an accident Aug. 7 when the motorcycle she was driving a few blocks from home was struck by a vehicle.
The 29-year-old suffered severe injuries and is at North Idaho Advanced Care Hospital in Post Falls after several weeks at Kootenai Health.
“She’s doing pretty good, actually,” said her husband, Lucas Martinez. “She’s making good progress.”
He said there are reasons to believe she is beginning to recognize and understand her family, which includes twin boys and a girl.
“So that’s really good,” Martinez said.
A GoFundMe fundraiser had brought in $11,314 of its goal of $15,000 as of Wednesday afternoon. Donors left encouraging messages.
“Many Blessing Jackie & family! We are praying for you! May God's love be so close to you in this time.” — Karla and Matt Colonial
“Blessings sent with love and light.” — DebbiSurman
“Prayers for a full recovery, from our family to yours!” — Heidi and Trevor Cooper (Quincy)
Martinez said it’s been difficult without Jackie at home, but family and friends have rallied around them.
“She’s like the home base for everybody,” he said. “She’s all about making sure everybody is set and taken care of.”
It’s not just in the day-to-day things she is missed.
“Jackie is everything to all of us,” Martinez said. “Not hearing her voice, not seeing her at home, has impacted our life in a dramatic way.”
Lucas and Jackie recently marked their sixth wedding anniversary and have been together more than a decade.
“She’s the most loving and caring person I’ve ever met,” said Martinez, who has missed work to be by his wife's side.
He said he had difficulties trusting people before meeting Jackie.
“She has been the one person in my life that has always been there for me,” he said.

The Young Family’s Foundation launched about a year ago with a mission "to empower young, hardworking families to achieve the dream of home ownership. Even if a family saved $25,000, they would still be $19,000 short of the down payment needed to buy a $550,000 home, which is the median price in Kootenai County. It’s estimated that only about 20% of area households can afford to buy a home.
