MOSES LAKE — Locals finally got their annual fix of Spaceburgers last weekend on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin location on North Paxson Drive in Moses Lake.

The event was sponsored by the Lioness Club of Moses Lake, with proceeds being split between the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin and the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation. Kim Pope, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club, said she hasn’t seen totals on the money raised, but estimated sales reached over $10,000.

Cars began lining up at the drive-thru at 9:30 a.m., an hour before burgers even started being served on Saturday morning. Spaceburgers were served until about 4:30 p.m. when supplies ran out completely, Pope said.

“There was a line at one time where people were waiting two hours just to get to the front and place their order,” Pope said. “It was unbelievable, but everyone was so wonderful. They were appreciative.”

After missing out on their typical first couple of chances to grab a Spaceburger — Moses Lake Spring Festival and Grant County Fair — patrons were happy to “get their fix,” Pope said. With events limited this year, Pope said the Lioness Club were looking for any ways they might be able to help out with charitable donations within the community.

People were happy to wait in line for a few hours to help out two great causes, she said. A donation around $4,000 for the Boys & Girls Club is huge for the organization.

“If we get $4,000, that would sponsor two of our club members for an entire year, or it would provide an afternoon snack for 4,000 kids,” Pope said.

The same amount of money goes a long way for Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation also, who disburse about $7,000 in gas vouchers for patients going through treatment, Pope said.

She said she was excited when the Lioness Club approached them about hosting a joint event at their location. Pope said the organization is constantly looking for ways to be involved in supporting the community.

“They are a longstanding club that is truly a service organization,” Pope said. “They have been great friends to the Boys & Girls Club for years. They helped sponsor our new building when it was built. We’re just so thankful for them to be helpful in the community, not just for us, but for everybody.”

She said every person that came through the line last Saturday was appreciative. With a good cause and a delicious treat, it seemed to be worth the wait.
