The Fisher River Fire Service Area Board of Trustees is planning a significant hike in its annual fees. If approved, some residents could see their rates double.

For residential property owners, the proposed fee increase would bring their annual rate up from $140 to $280. Those with property classified as “commercial 1” would see their rates jump from $280 a year to $500. Owners with a lot designated as “commercial 2” would face an increase of $250, bringing their bill to $600.

Board of trustees members also plan to add a new designation for “structure improvements.” Commissioner Mark Peck (D-1) said this classification would cover properties with structures such as trailer sheds. The rate for this new designation would be $177 a year.

To give the public a chance to comment on the proposed fee schedule, county commissioners will hold a hearing on Sept. 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the Fisher River Community Hall.

While the board of county commissioners unanimously passed a resolution that set the public meeting during their Sept. 23 meeting, they stopped short of endorsing the proposals.

“We recognize the need for the new fee increase, but not necessarily the amount,” said Lincoln Commissioner Jerry Bennet (D-2) during the meeting.
