Evans’ slam boosts Bulldogs

ST. IGNATIUS — Freshman outfielder Izzy Evans launched a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Mission-Arlee-Charlo a sufficient cushion to hold off visiting Eureka on Friday.

Liev Smith (1-0) struck out seven and allowed three runs in five innings to earn the win. Kooper Page struck out four over two innings of relief.

The Lady Bulldogs (4-0) led 4-1 after four innings, but the Lions scored two in the top of the fifth to pull within 4-3. M-A-C answered with two more in the bottom of the fifth, on a sac bunt from Smith and a single from Evans.

After Page blanked Eureka in the sixth, Payton Smith singled, Katelyn Young reached on an error and Jerny Crawford drew a walk to load the bases with one out for Evans, who put the game away with a high, deep homer to left-center.

“She has it in her, every pitch, as long as she doesn’t try to kill it,” M-A-C head coach Shane Reum said after the game. “If she tries for the fences, she doesn’t get it. But if she just lets it go …”

Evans finished with five RBIs for the Bulldogs, who also got two RBIs each from Hayleigh Smith and Payton Smith.

Page and Liev Smith each doubled for the Bulldogs.

The Lions mounted a late rally and scored two runs with two outs in the top of the seventh before Page ended the game with a strikeout.

Reum said this year’s squad includes 13 players from Mission, six from Arlee and nine from Charlo.

The unbeaten Lady Bulldogs improved to 4-0 with the win, heading into a game at Ronan on Tuesday night after the Leader went to press.
