Chiefs shut down Portland late for second straight win

SPOKANE — Mason Beaupit stopped 35 shots for Spokane, which held visiting Portland scoreless in the final two periods of a 3-1 Western Hockey League win on Friday at the Spokane Arena.
Portland took a 1-0 advantage after the first period. The Winterhawks outshot Spokane 12-5 in the period.
Bobby Russell scored on a breakaway 39 seconds into the second period to tie the game at 1-1 for Spokane. On its lone power play attempt of the night, Adam Beckman scored his team-leading fifth goal a little under three minutes later to take a 2-1 lead after the second period.
Cordel Larsen capped the scoring with an empty net goal with 46 seconds remaining.
Spokane (2-4-2-1, 7 points), which trails Tri-City by one point for fourth in the U.S. Division, closes out the four-game homestand tonight, facing Portland again starting at 5:10.
