Several local and online events for Earth Day will be taking place next week for locals to celebrate, including cleanup at Pine Street Woods and several online films and discussions.

The Earth Day cleanup at Pine Street Woods, will run from 10 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m Saturday, April 24, with snacks and refreshments for volunteers. KLT merchandise will also be for sale.

“We have not done this event before since last year would have been the first year and we were in the midst of COVID,” KLT Executive Director Katie Cox wrote. “Last year we sponsored Solo GoVo which were solitary volunteer events at Pine Street Woods.”

Volunteers will meet at the Pine Street Woods parking lot, and directions can be found at kaniksu.org or call (208) 263-9471 for more information.

The Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeepers are also hosting a shoreline cleanup at the Sand Creek and City Beach shorelines April 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers can show up any time between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the City Beach pavilion in Sandpoint. Coffee snacks, gloves and bags will be provided.

The Sandpoint library will also be hosting three online film viewings and discussions moderated by experts following the films.

The first film, “Anthropocene,” will go live Tuesday, April 20 and be available for seven days after.

The official viewing is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30. Participants who register on Eventbrite will be sent a Zoom link to discuss the film after.

“Anthropocene” examines whether human impact has moved the planet into a new geological epoch — and its political, social and behavioral implications.

East Bonner County Library District Lifelong Learning Center and Adult Programs coordinator Mike Bauer said of all three films, he’s especially excited for this film.

“I think that really sounds intriguing,” he said.

The second film, “The Wisdom to Survive,” confronts the general scientific consensus that climate change has already arrived, examines some of its driving forces and how it has and will affect people’s lives.

The viewing will be from 5:30-70:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 21 and the discussion will be moderated by Jean Gerth with 350Sandpoint.

The third film, “Addicted to Plastic,” covers plastic over the past 100 years, interviews about recycling, the ecological impacts of plastic and plastic alternatives.

The discussion will be moderated by Gabrielle Deubendorfer with the Citizens’ Climate Lobby.

All three of the films are by Bullfrog Films, Bauer said. The library will continue to have film screenings every fourth Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.

“This is our third month of doing it, and we’ve had great attendance,” he said. “I’m hoping in the fall we’ll do it in person.”
