BONNERS FERRY — The Boundary County Sheriff’s Office will once again offer an Off-Highway Vehicle training course for youth on May 14.

Idaho law requires that any person without a valid motor vehicle license who wishes to operate an OHV on U.S. Forest Service roads must take an IDPR-approved OHV safety course.

Riders age 15 and younger who wish to operate an OHV on roads must also be supervised by adults. Idaho currently recognizes OHV Education certificates from State-issued programs. Certificates must have the State or Program logo displayed on the certificate.

The Sheriff’s office has several deputies who are trained instructors to offer this course locally, which covers riders on ATVs, UTVs or motorbikes; it is tentatively scheduled for May 14 and lasts approximately 4 hours.

According to a news release, safety is critical to the county sheriffs, so the course is being offered.

“For that reason, the Sheriff’s Office is offering an off-highway vehicle course free for youth which includes ATV, UTV and motorbike rider safety, rules of the road and ethical use.”

Completing the course will provide young riders with the Idaho Parks and Recreation certificate allowing them to ride on any National Forest roads.

Riders must provide their own vehicle and appropriate safety gear for the course (minimum of helmet, protective footwear, gloves and eye protection).
