ROYAL CITY — A Seattle woman was killed when she attempted to pass a semi and collided head-on with a pickup truck near Royal City at about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. The Royal City man driving the truck was flown to Harborview Medical Center.

Marcella Gulick, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene on state Route 26, about six miles west of Royal City, according to a press release from the Washington State Patrol.

Gulick was driving east when she passed a semi and ran head-on into a vehicle driven by Juan Ojeda, 20. Both cars came to rest on the eastbound shoulder, the WSP release said.

Ojeda was flown to Confluence Health-Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, then to Harborview. Brian Donohue, media relations for Harborview, said Ojeda was in satisfactory condition as of Thursday afternoon.

At least one roundabout project is in its final phase, held over from fall 2025. The intersection of State Route 282 and Nat Washington Way will be closed the week of April 6 to allow crews to install permanent lights. “This really is the final (closure),” wrote Grant County Administrator Tom Gaines in a media release. “The roundabout will close at 6 a.m. Monday, and we plan to reopen by Friday, possibly sooner if the work finishes early.”
