It worked so well the last two years and everyone had so darn much fun, the Montana 10X Air Rifle and Archery Club are holding another cornhole tournament Saturday, Aug. 14 at the Eva Horning Park in Superior.

These are the students who practice, practice and practice shooting week nights during the winter in the Mineral County Shooting Sports Association building at the Lozeau/Quartz exit from I-90.

This year’s air rifle team consisted of Bailey Milender, Madeline Drey, Heath Edison, Brydon Drey and Mackenzie Chapman. Milender just placed 11th in the entire nation of the Youth Shooting Sports Group in Colorado.

The archery team was represented by Emma Traeder, Truman Traeder, Haley Kruger, Keigan Kruger, James Kelly and Kodi Kelly. Both groups are also enrolled in the local 4-H Montana State University Extension Program through their archery and air rifle programs which gives the participants many more tournaments to compete in by having memberships in two shooting organizations.

“This is our main fundraiser for the 4-H Youth Shooting Sports groups and we’re hoping for another good turnout this year,” said Rich Milender, coach of the 10X Air Rifle Team.

Rusty Parkin and Ladd Nakasone are the archery coaches as both are avid archers themselves and work in seasonal construction which allows coaching-time during the cold, dark winter months.

Jackson Contractor Group and Darlows Quality Foods/Ace Hardware are both primary event sponsors this year. The Mineral County Shooting Sports Association remains as great support base by donating some of their proceeds from their annual banquet each fall. All said and done, the net profit has been around $2,500 at the end of the tournament.

“We will be under that amount this year as we just haven't had time to get out there and find sponsors," coach Milender said. "To give people an idea of the money it takes to run these teams, it costs us about $8,000 to send a full team to Camp Perry, which is like our Olympics.”

The proceeds from the tournament benefit the archery and air rifle clubs for purchase of new equipment, maintenance of existing equipment, travel expenses, tournament entry fees and other group expenses.

Teams consist of two people with an entry fee of $50 per team. Registration can be completed online at www.buildmt.com or through the Scoreholio app.

“If we get 40 teams, the first place finisher would get cash of around $800 and a set of custom boards built by me,” Milender said. “Second place will get cash of $480 and a wall hung award built by me. Third place will get cash of $320. The cash awards will go up or down depending on how many teams we have and final sponsorships. Time is running out on event sponsors though, as I'll need time to apply the logos and such to the boards and finish them prior to the tournament."

The tournament starts at about 11 a.m. and should be finishing up at 6 p.m. They will have burgers, hot dogs, water and Gatorade on site for purchase.
