KELLOGG — The Deceitful fire burning north of the Silver Valley grew rapidly Monday night, forcing residents to evacuate some areas.

The fire reportedly went on a 5-mile run, toward the communities of Eagle and Murray.

It grew past Beaver Creek, over King’s Ridge and down to Prichard Gulch near the McComber Gulch area.

Officials said weather conditions caused the fire’s rapid spread.

Level 3 evacuation orders were issued for Coal Creek-Prichard, Murray, Avery Creek, the White Tail community, Eagle and Beaver Creek down to Pony Gulch.

Those orders remain in effect. Residents should not return to their homes.

In coordination with the Wallace School District, county officials arranged for displaced residents to stay at Silver Hills Elementary in Osburn.

Displaced residents who need overnight parking can usethe Silver Hills parking lot or Sather Field parking lot in Silverton.

Power is out in all evacuated areas.

At the request of fire managers, Avista Utilities powered down lines in the area and will turn them back on when it’s safe to do so.

Evacuation levels were updated for several areas on Tuesday.

As of press time, areas under Level 2 evacuation status include the Coal Creek Community, from the Coeur d’Alene River Road mile marker 13 (east of Castle Rock) to mile marker 18.

This means residents should be prepared to evacuate, with supplies gathered and vehicles fueled and ready to go.

Areas under Level 1 evacuation status include:

• North of Highway 90 (includes Old River Road), Kingston to Steamboat at Coeur d’Alene River Road, mile marker 13 near Castle Rock

• North Smelterville

• North Kellogg

• Montgomery-Moon

• Silverton

• Canyon Creek - Burke Road

Residents in these areas should consider planning or packing in case an evacuation becomes necessary.

Despite extreme fire behavior, officials said there were no injuries Monday. No homes were lost.

The blaze reportedly damaged a small number of secondary structures and outbuildings.

Road closures include:

• Cd’A River Road and Old River Road from Steamboat Pond (11) to Shoshone Mountain Retreat & Ranch (Lutherhaven)

• Beaver Creek Road from Babin’s Junction south to Dobson Pass

• King’s Pass

• Prichard Creek Road and Thompson Pass

Meanwhile, the U.S. Forest Service reminded visitors to check online resources and call the local ranger station before their trip to make sure they have the latest information.

Wildfire conditions can change fast. Checking conditions after arrival is too late.

Even after flames have passed, threats remain.

Wildfires can weaken trees, loosen rocks and other debris and create heat pockets that can remain in the ground for months.
