Following weeks of water-use restrictions, Polson’s water system is showing signs of stabilizing.

“We appreciate the public’s help and urge continued conservation in whatever way possible,” City Manager Ed Meece said Monday.

“All levels are holding. We still see the irrigation dip in the evening, but then it comes back by morning.”

Crews were set to begin on-site construction work on a new well this week, and Meece said the goal is to have it contributing to the system by the end of August. If all goes as scheduled, the city’s water restrictions should be entirely lifted by early September.

The city implemented an odd-even watering restriction July 6, meaning residents with odd-numbered addresses could water only on odd calendar days, and even days for even-numbered addresses.

Those restrictions expanded July 24, with a ban on all “unnecessary use of water,” including watering of yards and green spaces. Also prohibited was the washing of vehicles and other equipment.

On Aug. 2 the city returned to the odd-even rules, which remain in place. Meece said all restrictions are likely to be lifted once the new well goes online.

Crews are constructing the new well No. 8 on the east side of town. It will supply a water tank just east of Walmart.

The city worked with the state Department of Environmental Quality to fast-track approval for a temporary connection of the well. Meece said the work is being completed to the standards of a permanent connection, so well No. 8 should be a permanent part of the system, pending permit and inspection requirements.
