Editor's note: This article was updated on Sept. 1 to include information on West Glacier School.

Schools are starting the 2021-20 school year at a time when Covid-19 cases are on the rise in Flathead County and the nation grapples with the highly contagious delta variant.

Schools throughout the valley, however, are opening with in-person classes and at least one significant change from last year. Wearing masks will be optional in all but three local school districts, Whitefish, West Glacier and Somers-Lakeside. The exception is on school buses. All students must wear masks while riding buses under federal law, regardless of vaccination status. Those include buses operated by public and private schools.

In the Whitefish School District, students and staff in kindergarten through sixth grade are required to mask up. In seventh through 12th grades, wearing masks is optional but strongly recommended. The school board will reconsider the mask guidelines if vaccines become available for children younger than 12, or by its Oct. 12 board meeting.

The Somers-Lakeside School District will require masks be worn for the first six weeks. The school board is set to review the requirement during a Sept. 20 meeting at Lakeside Elementary School.

West Glacier requires masks but plans to revisit the mandate on a monthly basis, according to West Glacier Lead Teacher Krista Booher.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends universal masking indoors for K-12 schools regardless of vaccination status.

For people 12 and older, the CDC recommends getting a Covid-19 vaccination, but it is not required to attend school. Currently, Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine is approved for children 12 and up.

Students and staff who test positive for Covid-19 are required to isolate for 10 days, according to the Flathead City-County Health Department.
