The Ronan Tip-off Event this past weekend was not a real good place for the Noxon girls basketball team as they dropped a pair of games by lopsided margins.
Friday the girls took on Philipsburg, which finished the event 2-0, and wound up on the wrong end of a 65-22 score.
Saturday night was a much better showing for the Lady Red Devils, who were ahead at the end of the third quarter before their shooting touches deserted them and they lost to Darby 43-29.
Friday’s game with the Lady Prospectors was no contest in a hurry as Philipsburg jumped out to a 20-2 first quarter lead and poured it on from there. The Lady Prospectors were led by Asha Comings who topped all scorers with 21 points.
Things did not get much better for Noxon in the second eight minutes of play as Philipsburg’s smothering defense and points off turnovers led to a 22-4 quarter advantage and a 42-6 halftime lead.
The Lady Red Devils fought back in the third quarter, outscoring the Philipsburg subs by a 12-7 margin but it was too little, too late. Heading into the final quarter the Lady Prospectors were up 49-18.
Philipsburg added to their margin of victory in the fourth quarter and closed out the game with a 43-point victory.
Emily Brown was the leading scorer for Noxon with 9 points.
Saturday night the Red Devils faced Darby in a contest that Noxon had control of but let slip away due to turnovers and cold shooting.
The Devils led 9-6 after the first quarter of a game that featured numerous foul calls throughout.
Noxon added to its lead in the second quarter by outscoring Darby 15-9 and taking a 24-15 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
Darby opened second half with a 6-0 run to pull withing 24-21 before a Noxon three-pointer broke the rally. But after pushing their lead back to six, Noxon gave up another five points in a row before holding on to a razor thing 28-26 lead as the third quarter came to a close.
From there the fourth quarter was all Philipsburg as they built a 10-point lead, then sealed the victory by stopping Noxon’s offense in its tracks.
Noxon’s boys, meanwhile played the same two teams, losing to Philipsburg 63-38. Against the Prospectors, the boys also fell behind early, trailing 17-5 at the end of the first quarter.
The Red Devils fell behind by a 33-15 margin by halftime and 43-27 at the end of the third quarter.
A final score from their game with Darby was not available.
Noxon’s teams next play at Hot Springs this Friday evening, then take to the court on the 14th of December for a home encounter with Troy.
