Libby Volunteer Ambulance is offering a training course in early 2022 for anyone interested in joining the local first responder group.

The emergency medical technician course kicks off on Jan. 4 and will run until April 16. Aspiring volunteer crew members will learn everything from how to treat injuries and illnesses to human anatomy, according to Jerry Mee, an EMT with the local group.

“It’s a pretty extensive course on how to treat different medical situations,” he said.

The volunteer organization is hoping to see at least 10 new members complete the course, according to Mee. In recent years, the organization, which Mee said counts around 16 active members, has been stretched thin.

Volunteers with the ambulance group are generally on call for 48 hours a month. Many divide their service into six-hour sessions though some will take on 24-hour stints. The group’s ambulance barn is outfitted with a kitchen, living room and workout room for those who choose to take long shifts.
