Shorthanded Lady Cats fall to Lake City JV

COEUR d'ALENE — The Clark Fork girls basketball team faced a unique situation Monday night.
Most of the Lady Cats' varsity team was sidelined due to sickness, so the squad had to rely on a handful of young JV players — and they nearly brought home a win.
Clark Fork fell to the Lake City JV team 25-22.
Head coach Jordan Adams said they nearly canceled the game due to a lack of players, but the eight that took the court for the Lady Cats found a way to put up quite the fight.
"Our JV girls definitely stepped up, which was really cool," she said. "I literally sent them a text last night at like five and said, 'Hey listen, everybody bring your gear to school tomorrow, if you go to school tomorrow you're going to the game.'"
Katelyn Matteson and Lilly Reuter were the only full-time varsity players available for the game. The rest of the team was made of players with minimal varsity experience or none.
Adams said she treated the contest more like a JV game because of the amount of inexperience Clark Fork had at its disposal. However, the Lady Cats still held onto the lead for more than three quarters.
Ultimately though, their lack of depth allowed the Timberwolves to outscore them 14-2 in the fourth quarter.
Clark Fork led 15-6 at the half and kept Lake City JV scoreless in the first quarter.
"That third quarter where we sat some of our more seasoned girls ... they just got in the swing of things and our defense had a really hard time picking back up," Adams said.
Matteson rose to the occasion and scored 18 points for the Lady Cats.
"She was hitting her 3s left and right and had a couple fastbreak lay-ins," Adams said.
Reuter and Savannah Weymouth each had 2 points. Freshman Jamie Herrick made her first varsity start and saw plenty of playing time.
"She's a really strong defender so that definitely helped a couple times," Adams said.
Clark Fork (0-4) will hope to have some of its varsity players back when they host Genesis Prep at 6 p.m. Thursday.
