Three for four is not bad.
If you are a baseball player and you get a hit three out of four times, you are a millionaire or better.
And three for four is just what the Thompson Falls boys and girls basketball teams did on the courts this week. The girls rolled to impressive easy wins over Stillwater Christian (77-34) and Choteau (71-28), while the boys lost a close one to Stillwater Christian (50-46), then regrouped and beat Choteau (55-46).
All the games were played during the Anaconda Tip-off event in Anaconda Friday and Saturday.
The girls continued their winning ways beginning with Fridays shellacking of Stillwater. They jumped to a quick 25-7 lead after one quarter, then eased off a bit as the Lady Cougars shaved five points off that lead in the second quarter.
At halftime the Lady Hawks were up 35-22.
Coach Chadd Laws players came out fired up in the third quarter and blitzed SC 25-8 to build their lead to 60-30 with one quarter to play. They added to that advantage by a 17-6 count in the final quarter to walk away with the win.
And it was pretty much the same song Saturday against the Choteau Lady Bulldogs.
T Falls once again took an early lead after one quarter, although not as commanding as it was against Stillwater, this time 17-11.
But the second quarter was even more pronounced in favor of the Hawks who outscored the Lady Bulldogs 27-3 to build a 44-14 halftime lead and once again allow reserves some court time.
They would continue to add to the lead and by the end of the third quarter they were up 67-23 and ready to keep their record unblemished.
For the boys, there was not a mismatch, especially against Stillwater.
The Cougars battled the Blue Hawks to a 10-9 first quarter lead, then saw T Falls win the second quarter 15-14, leaving the score knotted at 24-each at the end of the first half.
And despite a 21-point scoring performance from Thompson’s Jesse Claridge, Stillwater managed to pull out front by four, 40-36 by the end of the third quarter.
The two teams traded basics evenly the rest of the way and the Cougars held on the secure the win.
Saturday the Blue Hawks had a chance to erase the taste of their narrow loss to Stillwater and made the most of the opportunity.
They squeaked out a 14-13 first quarter lead, then erupted for 16 points while holding Choteauto seven in the second quarter. Entering the halftime intermission Thompson held a 30-20 lead.
That was as big a lead as there would be in a close, hard-fought second half. Choteau managed to shave one point off the lead by the end of the third quarter, but the Blue Hawks played them even up the rest of the way and their nine point lead withstood the test.
Senior Nathan Schraeder led a trio of Blue Hawks who scored in double figures, as he poured in 15 points for the game. Also scoring in double digits were Adam Childers with 11 and Claridge who added 10.
Next up for the girls is a Tuesday home game against Libby. The boys will take on the Libby boys Thursday. Both teams then head to Plains Friday evening for an encounter with their Sanders County rival Horsemen and Trotters.
