A Charlo man was sentenced to 30 years in prison with 20 years suspended for three felonies stemming from a domestic dispute in March.

Stoney Randal Corcoran, 51, was convicted of criminal endangerment, assault on a peace or judicial officer and intimidation, all felonies. Visiting Judge Robert Whalen issued the sentence Dec. 9 in Lake County District Court.

On March 23 a woman called 911 from Ronan to report being threatened with a gun and being chased down by a vehicle while driving, according to court documents.

A Lake County sheriff’s deputy arrived at the scene, spotted Corcoran and ordered him to the ground, reportedly concerned that he had a gun. Corcoran refused and a struggle ensued. Corcoran punched the deputy but was taken into custody.

Investigators talked to multiple witnesses who described a series of physical threats made by Corcoran — both verbally and via text message — toward the mother of his child and her fiancé.

The woman described a previous incident during which Corcoran entered her home, armed with a pistol, while she was alone. She eventually was able to de-escalate the situation, and he left.

She also described a time when she and her fiancé were driving near Charlo and Corcoran spotted them. He reportedly chased them in his vehicle, eventually blocking them and pointing a gun at them.

Corcoran pleaded not guilty to five felonies in April, and a trial was set for Nov. 8. He agreed to a plea deal in September, and the state dismissed two counts of felony assault with a weapon.

Corcoran was booked into the Lake County jail in March with bail set at $100,000, and he was still there awaiting transfer to the Department of Corrections as of Tuesday morning.

Corcoran was charged as a persistent felony offender due to an extensive criminal record, which includes a conviction for aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon in Montana in 1989.
