With just three wrestlers competing in the prestigious Flathead Girls Invitational meet, the Plains-Hot Springs squad finished eighth Saturday in a field of 22 teams from throughout the state.
Competing against full teams from schools like Kalispell and Billings Senior, the Horsemen girls captured three top four finishes that earned them 56 points during the day-long event.
Host Kalispell won the meet with 254.5 team points, while Senior was second with 209.0 placement points.
Leading the charge for the Plains team, which participated in the Plains Quad meet Thursday on their home mats, was Lillian McDonald, who placed second at 152 pounds.
McDonald, who had a pin against one of her male opponents during the Plains gathering, advanced to the finals with a quick pin over Haven Ferguson of Billings Skyview.
In the finals match, McDonald fell to Billings Senior’s Kendal Tucker via a pin at the 2:04 mark.
Plains also got a third place finish from Brynn Courville, who won a narrow 4-3 decision over Evija Cagle of Skyview. She advanced to the third place match with a win by fall over Ronan’s Katie Dolence at 3:40.
The other Plains wrestler competing in the meet, Taylor Angle, was a co-third place finisher with Cheyenne D’Aigneau of Senior, based on a pair of byes awarded to both competitors.
The Plains-Hot Springs showing was second best among the smaller schools who entered the competition, better only by Cut Bank, which tied for sixth place with Billings West, just two points ahead of Plains.
Ronan High School girls finished 10th.
