St. Regis basketball wins two at home

Two for three ain’t bad, especially with a core of youngsters on the court.

But that is rapidly becoming a pleasant problem for St. Regis coach Jesse Allan as his Tigers won two on the home court and lost a tight game against traditional power Arlee on the road this past week.

Tuesday St. Regis knocked off the Frenchtown JV 60-54 in St. Regis, then lost 53-45 in Arlee, before coming back home Saturday night and running and shooting their way past Victor 62-39.

And in the course of the week, Allan and crew got a better look at a group of freshmen and sophomores who have become a deep and increasingly reliable support staff for the Tigers two seniors, Tanner Day and Adam Ball.

St. Regis played the Bronc JV straight up in the first quarter and came away with a 13-12 lead after the first eight minutes. But Day was in the midst of exploding for a career game as St. Regis fought to a 28-22 halftime lead.

With Day dominating the boards inside with rebounding and put-back baskets throughout the evening, the Tigers would have just enough to pull out the win. The two teams played the second half dead-even score wise.

Day would end up with 36 points, most of them lay-in and rebound put backs. And sophomore John Pruitt hit three long-rangers from outside the three-point arc to supplement the work Day was doing.

Pruitt finished the game with 18 points as the Tigers closed out the win.

The game against the always tough Arlee squad was close most of the way.

It was 15-12 Arlee at the end of one as Day had seven first quarter points, including a three pointer.

In the second quarter of play, Pruitt became a regular visitor to the charity stripe, sinking seven of eight free throws and adding a three-pointer as the Tigers erased the early Arlee lead and took a one-point, 25-24 lead at the half.

In the third frame, Arlee clamped down on defense and St. Regis went cold, allowing the Warriors to build a 41-32 lead with eight minutes to go.

St. Regis, behind seven points by Day, was able to trim just one point off the Warrior lead the rest of the way as Arlee held on to win.

Saturday night, with fans flocking to the St. Regis gym despite heavy snow warnings, St. Regis took on the Victor Pirates and grabbed an early lead that they steadily increased throughout the contest.

The Tigers built a 32-21 lead at the half, and held off every Victor rally, thanks in most part to the shooting of freshman Kaleb Park, who drained four long distance threes, and was aided by two three-pointers by fellow freshman Hunter Stolla and one from yet another ninth-grader, Ayden Rael.

In the end, with Day having another solid game inside, the outside sharp-shooting was too much for Victor to overcome as the Tigers outscored the Pirates 20-6 in the third quarter to take a 52-27 advantage into the fourth period.

Day was again the leading scorer on the night with 21, followed by Park who tallied 16 points and sophomore Pruitt who chipped in 12 and was a disruptive force on defense throughout the game.

The Tigers will play just one more game, a match this Friday night at home against Charlo, before heading into the Christmas break.
