KELLOGG — The Spartans flexed their muscles at the George Wild Invitational this past weekend.
Three Priest River wrestlers won their respective weight classes at the tourney and eight Spartans placed overall.
As a team, Priest River grabbed third with 150 points and they were 25 points behind first-place Clearwater Valley. The Spartans finished in front of all their Intermountain League foes — Timberlake (fifth), Kellogg (sixth) and Bonners Ferry (eighth).
The Spartans are loaded with 28 wrestlers on their roster this winter and that depth shined through at their first varsity tournament of the season.
"They all did really good," head coach Quinton Holbrook said. "We still have a lot of work to do, but I'm very happy with their hard work. I’m expecting great things out of this group this year, I think we’re going to shock a lot of teams."
Freshman Colm McLaimtaig (106), senior Keith Poirier (126) and junior Charles Bennett (145) all brought home titles in their weight classes.
McLaimtaig rolled to first with three pins. Poirier and Bennett also had three pins and earned majority-decision victories in their championship matches.
Aidan Troumbley secured third at 132 pounds with a 4-1 record, while Matyus McLain took fourth at 195 pounds with three pins and a 3-2 record.
Three girls also placed for the Spartans. Kailee Davis (113) and Helena White (145) both grabbed fourth-place finishes and Mackenzie Wardwell nabbed fifth at 182 pounds.
Caeden McLaimtaig (132), Austin Reeves (145) and Bradley Bennett (170) just missed out on placing in their weight classes.
Priest River heads to Moscow at 4 p.m. Wednesday for some duals and then travels to North Idaho College on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Tri-State Tournament. The Spartans also host some duals with Sandpoint, Newport and Riverside next Tuesday.
