Flathead wrestlers scoring big in Idaho, Washington

Flathead’s wrestling teams continued to find success Friday, both in Couer d’Alene and Pasco, Wash.

The Brave Brawlers are sitting second at the Tri-State Invitational in Idaho after the first day, with 110 points. Spokane Mead leads the way at 120, and Post Falls (108) is among five teams to break the century mark.

All 10 boys Flathead took are still wrestling, with six in the semifinals: Aiden Downing (113 pounds), Asher Kemppainen (138), Gabe Lake (160), Anders Thompson (170), Noah Poe-Hatten (182) and Chase Youso (195).

Fin Nadeau (145) is among those in the wrestlebacks after an overtime loss.

Over in Pasco, Flathead’s girls surged to the first-day lead in the Best of the West.

The Bravettes have 160 points; Othello is next with 143, followed by Chiawana with 124.

Mykel Lee won two matches at 110 to get things started for Flathead; Skye Shelmerdine won twice before falling in the semifinals at 115. She’s still in the wrestlebacks.

Trinity Bolvin posted three wins at 120, putting her in the semifinals; Lily McMahon advanced to the 130 final with a semifinal pin; teammate Emma Gambino went 2-0 and advanced to the 140 final as well. McKenna McCarthy won twice to advance to the semifinals at 155, and Boston Howell and Alliyah Stevens are both in the 235 semifinals.

Meanwhile the Best in the West Duals were going on for the boys, and Flathead’s boys went 4-1 to take third.

They beat Ki-Be 78-6, Spokane West Valley 48-33; Walla Walla 60-24; and Ellensburg 45-30 and fell to Selah 53-18.

Cade Gardner at 138, Sawyer Troupe at 195 and Williams Barnes at 113 provided the wins against Selah. Barnes and Troupe picked up four pins and a forfeit in the five duals.

The girls tournament concludes Saturday, while the Best in the West individual boys brackets take place. The Tri-State also concludes Saturday.
