PASCO, Wash. — The Sandpoint wrestling team opened the Best of the West Tournament in Pasco on Friday with a strong showing in five duals.

The Bulldogs dropped their first dual of the day to Newberg 2, but they reeled off four straight victories to win their pool.

Head coach Jake Stark said that opening loss to Newberg, Oregon was a real wake-up call for his team and they got stronger with every dual.

"We decided to start fighting from there on out," he said.

Sandpoint took down Richland 48-36, Hanford 54-21 and Goldendale 63-18. The Bulldogs tied with Pasco 42-42, but won a tiebreaker to claim the dual victory.

SHS went 4-1 in duals despite arriving at their hotel late Thursday night and having to forfeit at two weight classes every match — 138 and 145 pounds.

"Giving up two weights we still battled today," Stark said.

Blake Sherrill, Austin Smith, Calvin Hinds, Andrew Duke and Ashlei Hawkins all had standout performances on the mat, Stark said.

Stark said he farmed out Greg Belgarde, Aiden Rork and Kai McKinnon to other teams for the day to ensure they each got five bouts.

Sixteen Bulldogs made the trip to Pasco and they will wrap up the event Saturday with a single-elimination tournament in each weight class. Matches start at 9 a.m.
