LYNNWOOD, Wash. — After having a three-week layoff from game play, it could have been expected for the North Idaho College women’s basketball team to have been a little sluggish to start on Friday afternoon.

It was quite the opposite.

Sophomore Kolby Pimperton scored 18 points for the Cardinals, who jumped out to a 27-19 lead after the first quarter on the way to a 71-59 win over Portland in an NWAC Crossover game.

“We started really aggressive tonight,” said NIC coach Korina Baker, whose team hadn’t played since Nov. 27 after having a game canceled on Dec. 7, then Friday’s game canceled due to its opponent being in COVID protocol. “The girls were eager to play and had a good gameplan.”

Freshman Payton Hagy had 15 points and freshman Paige Beem had 12 points off the bench for NIC (4-3), which faces Green River today at 10 a.m. to conclude the tournament.

“It was a good win overall,” Baker said. “We had a bit of a lull in the second quarter, but came back strong in the second half.”

Tynesha Parnell scored 13 points for Portland (6-4).
