Helen Imogene Brockway passed away peacefully in Kootenai, Idaho, on Dec. 9, 2021 after 93 years of spreading smiles, laughter, and love.

Helen was born in Colburn, Idaho, to John and Mabel Selberg. Mabel lived to be 100 and Helen aspired of doing the same, which reflects her love of life. She grew up in Sandpoint, Idaho, in a loving home with her older brothers LeRoy and John Jr. Although she enjoyed dressing up and looking her best, even into her 90s, she loved to tell stories about how she could keep up with her brothers climbing mountains and playing in the woods.

She was a graduate of Sandpoint High School and went on to be a well-schooled student of life. She was an extremely hard worker to the extent of spending high school summers in a neighboring state earning money during World War II. She experienced several careers throughout her life including telephone operator, home builder, secretary, farmer, court reporter, and store clerk, amongst others. Chief among her careers was that of a loving mother and homemaker, raising her two children Jim “Buzz” and Jackie.

Helen loved new adventures. She went on a verity of international trips with family, which included Norway, Australia, and Australia, as well as a solo trip to Sweden. Not only was she adventurous, but creative as well. She loved to paint pictures of her favorite flowers and beautiful landscapes, many of which adorn the walls of her family’s homes. Her paintings act as a constant reminder of the beauty she added to the world. She was also an accomplished seamstress, taking after her mother, creating cozy blankets, and clothing for family. She loved to dance and for many years would regularly show off her twirl at local line dancing gatherings.

Helen was sweet, loving, caring, and quick with a smile that would warm your heart. Laughter was always in the air when friends and family were near.  She had a sweet giggle that followed almost every sentiment she expressed. Her joy and laughter will echo in the memories of all that knew her.

Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Jackie Shelton. She is survived by her son, Jim “Buzz” Brockway and his wife Sue; three grandchildren, Jackie Barnhart, Steve Shelton and his wife Jennifer, and Elisa Brockway; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, 23, Helen (namesake) 14, Patrick 13, Steven Jr. 12, and Genevieve 11; two great-great-grandchildren, Maycee 4, Zachary, 9 months; and niece (and dear friend) Sharon Selberg.

Family and friends are invited to sign Helen’s online guest book at www.coffeltfuneral.com.

Arrangements are under the care of Coffelt Funeral Service.
