Zags — again — sweep WCC men's basketball honors
SAN MATEO, Calif. — Gonzaga's Drew Timme and Jalen Suggs were named West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively.
Timme averaged 20 points in two more wins for unbeaten No. 1 Gonzaga this past week. His 40 points came on 15-of-22 shooting from the field (68.2 percent). The sophomore added 13 boards in the victories, along with five assists, two steals and a block.
This is the second weekly honor for Timme this season and the first since Nov. 30. Gonzaga has accumulated eight of 10 player and freshman awards in 2020-21.
Suggs scored 17 points in the win at USD on Thursday, making 5 of 9 from the field, including 3 of 4 from behind-the-arc. He dished out three assists and made three steals as well. Suggs also pulled down six boards at San Diego.
This is the seventh freshman of the week honor for Suggs so far this season.
Zag trio named to Wooden Late Season List
LOS ANGELES – Gonzaga’s Corey Kispert, Jalen Suggs and Drew Timme were named to the John R. Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 list, announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Monday. The award is presented to the nation's most outstanding basketball player.
Kispert leads the West Coast Conference in scoring at 20.2 points per game. He is shooting 57.7 percent from the field, which is second in the conference. The senior tops the league making 3.1 three-pointers per game at a WCC-best 48.6 percentage (sixth in the nation).
Suggs, who averages 13.5 points per game, leads the WCC in steals per game at 2.27, and is fifth in assists at 4.53 assists per game.
Timme is second in the conference averaging 18.7 points per game and fifth in rebounds at 6.88 per game. He leads the league shooting 62 percent from the field.
EWU's Groves is Big Sky Conference Player of the Week
Eastern Washington junior Tanner Groves was selected as this week's Big Sky Conference Player of the Week after he had his third straight double-double on Sunday in a 68-60 victory over Sacramento State at Reese Court in Cheney. He earned the same honor Monday from College Sports Madness.
Groves, a graduate of Shadle Park High in Spokane, finished with 23 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in Sunday's victory, hitting double figures in the first half alone with 15 points and 11 boards.
