LEWISTON — There was nothing wrong with the effort put forth by Lake City in Saturday’s 5A Inland Empire League game at Lewiston in coach Jim Winger’s eyes.

Lewiston, on this day, was just a little better.

Jack Kiesbuy scored a game-high 20 points — all in the first half — for Lake City, which fell 63-58 to the Bengals.

“We got down eight points early, and I’ve got a lot of praise for how Lewiston played,” Winger said. “It was our first game in their new gym, and it was packed. It was loud, raucous and they were pumped up to play. They shot the ball really well from the 3-point line and were 15 of 18 from the free-throw line.”

Blake Buchanan had nine points and nine rebounds for Lake City (12-6, 2-1 5A IEL), which hosts Coeur d’Alene on Friday. Wednesday’s game between Lake City and Moscow at Bear Den was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Bears program.

Kash Lang and George Forsmann scored 13 points each for Lewiston (9-5, 3-2), which travels to Post Falls on Friday.

“We had a chance at the end of the game, and did a lot of good things,” Winger said. “We responded to numerous runs of theirs. It was just a heck of an effort by them. We just ran into their ‘A’ game. They shot the ball extremely well, and that’s something they haven’t done really well all season. I think we got better tonight. You never want to lose, but I feel positive about the things that we did.”

KELLOGG — His team already shorthanded due to injuries, then foul trouble, first-year Wildcat coach Mike Martin had to get creative as the game went on.

And on.

And on.

Riply Luna scored 15 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, but fouled out midway into the second overtime, leaving the Wildcats with only four eligible players.

“Being down two players, we had to bring some guys up from the JV team,” Martin said. “We had two foul out, and it left those JV guys that had played earlier in the day out of quarters. We got through the second overtime, but had Riply get his fifth and had to play with four guys.”

Darren Bailey scored 18 points and Arie VanDenBerg added 16 for Sandpoint (4-12), which is scheduled to host Post Falls on Wednesday.

“We just switched our defense and tried not to let VanDenBerg get the ball,” Martin said. “They got some good looks at 3s at the end of the game to tie it, or even win it, but we just kind of weathered the storm.”

Logan Jerome scored 21 points and Kolby Luna added 18 for Kellogg (7-6), which hosts Bonners Ferry on Friday.
