Suggs honored again; Zags' Thursday game postponed
SAN MATEO, Calif. — Gonzaga's Jalen Suggs was named West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the fifth straight week, and eighth overall.
Suggs led No. 1 Gonzaga to a road win at Pacific. He scored 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. The freshman made two 3-pointers in the victory. He grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, dished out three assists and made a steal.
- Thursday’s game between Gonzaga and Santa Clara will not be played as scheduled due to a COVID-19 related protocol within the Broncos' program, the Zags announced.
GU's Townsend selected as Senior CLASS Award candidate
Gonzaga women’s basketball senior guard Jill Townsend has been selected as one of 30 women’s basketball players nationwide as a candidate for the 2020-21 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Townsend, the reigning WCC Player of the Year, currently leads the Zags in scoring at 13.5 points per contest, shooting 48.4 percent from the floor, and ranks third in rebounding at 5.3 per game.
Townsend is working toward her B.A. in biology, and she has spent nearly 60 hours assisting the Spokane community.
The candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in late February, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans.
WSU's Leger-Walker named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for a sixth time
SAN FRANCISCO — Washington State women's basketball player Charlisse Leger-Walker was named the Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week for the sixth time this season.
Leger-Walker recorded a pair of 20-point performances over the weekend against UCLA and USC, as the guard averaged 26.0 points in the two games. She scored 28 points in a win over No. 5 UCLA, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 42 seconds left.
Cougar standout Molina signs with WNBA team
INDIANAPOLIS – Former Washington State women's basketball standout Chanelle Molina has signed a WNBA training camp contract with the Indiana Fever.
Molina will look to secure a roster spot in the WNBA after playing one season for the Norrköping Dolphins in Sweden. The point guard has continued to shine overseas, as Molina averaged 18.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game for the Dolphins.
In her final season at Washington State, Molina earned her second-straight All-Pac-12 honorable mention nod for the Cougs. The Kailua Kona, Hawai'i native led WSU in assists (125), minutes played (1,070), 3-point field goals made (59) and rebounds (183) as a senior during the 2019-20 season. Molina finished second on the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game, and ranked inside the top-15 in the Pac-12 in assists, points and rebounds.
The guard came to Washington State as the program's first-ever five-star recruit, and left as the only player in Cougars women's basketball history to collect over 1,000 points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists. She is second on WSU's all-time career assists list with 429 helpers, while her 1,395 career points ranks ninth on the program's all-time scoring list. She is also second on the program's all-time 3-point field goals made list at 174.
