The little things add up.

That’s what Nancy Jones said Wednesday as she surveyed a van filled to the ceiling with food, all destined for the Community Action Partnership food bank.

“It’s teamwork,” she said. “You can make a difference in the community.”

Between Jan. 4 and Feb. 9, Kootenai County employees from 10 departments donated about 1,900 pounds of food — almost one ton. Every employee contributed something.

The effort was organized as a way to kickstart food bank donations, which are highest during the holiday season and dwindle after the first of the year.

Kootenai County has issued a challenge to other municipalities, Jones said — and the cities of Hayden and Coeur d’Alene have already accepted it.

Jones said she hopes the donation drive will be an annual event. To that end, North Idaho Trophy Co. has donated a trophy that will go to the municipality that donates the most food per capita each year.

“Next year, we’re bringing a bigger van,” said Community Action Program manager Darrell Rickard.

The food bank gives out about 200 boxes of food per week.

“We fill them up with as much nutrition as possible,” Rickard said. “Without donations like this, we wouldn’t have what we give away.”

Nonperishables like canned meat, vegetables and fruit are appreciated because they last longer, he said.

The food bank exists to ease food insecurity, Rickard said, so individuals and families can put their limited funds toward other expenses, like gas and rent.

Whether someone needs help putting food on the table for a few days or for an extended period, Rickard said they’re welcome to get help at the food bank.

“If you need food, that’s what we’re here for,” he said. “Never be afraid to come to us.”
