Coeur d’Alene Idaho may be a small town but there’s plenty of activities and adventures to partake in. Whether it’s an adventure to Tubbs Hill, boating on the lake, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling there is no shortage of fun to be had. And if the weather doesn’t permit there are still fun activities to do indoors. Hank’s Hatchets is one of those activities. Located on the corner of fourth and East Best Ave the axe throwing recreation center can be found between Davis Donuts and Rebel Junk.
“Hanks Hatchets started about two years ago in Whitefish Montana,” Coeur d’Alene location owner Cameron Davenport shares, “our goal is to bring something new and fun to the small towns of the Northwest.”
And something new and fun it is indeed. When you walk in there are booths to the left with plywood targets set up for axe throwing separated by wall dividers.
“If you don’t know how to throw an axe, one of our friendly staff members will coach you through it,” Davenport explains. “It’s quite fun and relaxing once you figure it out. Perfect for a date night with your partner.”
Coaches are available to help you with technique and safety. Tristan McName is one of Hank’s Hatchets Axe Coaches and a great resource for customers looking to pick up this new skill.
“When newcomers come in I give them the basics. How you stand, how you want to keep a 90 degree angle and follow through every time. I coach them until they stick it.”
Of course safety is top priority.
“The rules are simple,” Davenport states. “No throwing axes at each other. We throw together and retrieve the axes together. There is also a proper way to remove the axe from the target and pass it to the next player. We will go over all of that with you when you come in. Safety always comes first.”
With axe throwing available in other locations in town, Hank’s hatchets stands apart when it comes to league membership and competitive throwing.
“One thing that separates us from the other axe throwing facilities is that we offer league membership through WATL, the World Axe Throwing League.” Davenport supports members of the center who want to take their skills to the next level. “Members have a chance at competing in regional championships which can lead to Nationals and ESPN.
If you’re not interested in going pro there are many other services offered at Hank’s hatchets for individuals and groups alike year round .including parties for birthdays, businesses, holidays, and bachelor or bachelorette events. Hank’s Hatchets is a family friendly environment and children as young as 8 years old are allowed to participate. “We have throwing stars for those too small to properly hold an axe,” Davenport adds, encouraging families to have fun together. You can also bring your own beer or wine and enjoy a 21+ experience. Davenport hosts all levels of participants and seeks to give every guest an unforgettable experience whether they drop in for a private session or book for their party. “We hope to see more of our community participating in our upcoming Spring League.”
