Network libraries to reopen doors Monday

Community Network Libraries, closed since November except for appointments for computer use and to pick up books, will reopen their doors to the public on Monday.
To accommodate social distancing, the number of visitors will be dependent on the size of the library. Members will be able to browse, check out items, and use a computer and copier. Meanwhile, existing services continue.
“We are so thankful for improved community health. It means that we are one step closer to providing the full scale of services we offer,” said Library Director John Hartung.
Curbside pickup remains an option for convenience, as a personal health choice, or an alternative to wearing a mask indoors.
While visiting libraries, staff and members will continue to wear masks. The number of visitors in the library will be counted to maintain social distancing.
Libraries have cultivated a digital relationship with the community which was less prominent before the pandemic. The library launched a new website on Feb. 17 that provides greater accessibility to assistive technologies, mobile devices, and differently abled visitors.
Video programs continue to increase in their popularity. People watched 1,200 hours of the library’s YouTube videos over the last year. People have also downloaded 126,586 digital books in 2020, which is an increase of 20% from 2019.
“As a public library system, we remain attentive to the need to advance our digital presence. Interaction in digital spaces has become another important aspect of how we serve our patrons as a forward-looking library,” Hartung said.
Hayden resident Gwen Lawler Tough, in a letter to the editor in Friday's Press, questioned why libraries hadn't yet reopened.
Denna Grangaard, communications coordinator with Community Library Network, wrote that "in Stage 3, when public entry was limited to computer use reservations, we leaned on our curbside service to support distribution. This experience was less rewarding for us and for our customers."
She wrote they are "so ready for a healthy reopening."
