COEUR d’ALENE — A man is being held on $10,000 bail after he allegedly kicked a police officer.

Christopher M. Thompson, 42, of Rathdrum, is charged with battery upon an officer, a felony. He is also charged with resisting and being intoxicated on a roadway, both misdemeanors.

Police responded Wednesday night to a report that a man who appeared intoxicated was wandering outside a Coeur d’Alene motel. Management reportedly wanted the man, later identified as Thompson, trespassed from the premises.

Thompson was staggering in the middle of the road near the intersection of 20th Street and Lakeside Avenue when police contacted him, according to court documents.

Police said Thompson did not comply with orders to stop walking and keep his hands out of his pockets.

Officers reportedly pulled him to the ground and handcuffed him before transporting him to Kootenai Health for medical evaluation.

At the hospital, police said Thompson kicked an officer, connecting with the officer’s ankle. He allegedly attempted to kick the officer a second time, but missed.

Police said Thompson made comments that indicated the kick was intentional, according to court documents.

After Thompson was cleared by medical staff, police transported him to the Kootenai County jail.

Prosecutors said in court Thursday that Thompson has several previous criminal convictions, including misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia in 2002 and misdemeanor theft in 2003.

Judge Clark Peterson ordered Thursday that Thompson be held on $10,000 bail.
