Firefighter rescues dog that fell through the ice

SANDPOINT — A Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS firefighter rescued a dog Wednesday that had fallen through the ice on Lake Pend Oreille.
"I don't know how the dog got out there," said Selkirk Capt. Reny Hansen.
Firefighters were summoned to the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Lakeview Boulevard shortly before 10 a.m.
Hansen said the golden retriever was approximately 200 yards from shore. A firefighter was roped up and went out onto the ice with a rescue sled in order to pluck the dog from the icy waters.
"The dog was wet and cold, but ok," said Hansen.
Nobody was injured during the rescue operation, she added.
"It went flawlessly," Hansen said of the rescue.
Selkirk receives three to four dog rescue calls a year between Sandpoint and Sagle.
It was not immediately clear if the dog's owner was on the scene. Hansen said there was a woman on the scene who was familiar with the animal, although she was sure if that was the dog's owner.
Hansen is urging the public to be wary of the early-winter ice.
"That ice isn't very thick this time of year," she said.
