Smith places second at Lakeland JV Tournament to lead Bulldogs

RATHDRUM — Sandpoint wrestling kicked off the new year Saturday at the Lakeland JV Tournament.
Seventeen Bulldogs participated in the tourney and 16 of them placed. Austin Smith led the way, capturing second at 195 pounds. Jacob Crum (160) and Matt Thurlow (220) each brought home third-place finishes.
Christian Troumbley-Karkoski (170), Owen Wimmer (182) and Carson Laybourne (285) secured fourth in their weight classes, while Justin Lewis (113), Robert Newsom (152) and Calvin Hinds (170) all took sixth.
Raphael Eldridge and Khyrin Riddle were seventh at 138 and 170 pounds respectively and Arlen Newton grabbed eighth at 145.
Braden Norris (132, 14th), Rylie Hancock (138, 12th), Grace Balch (170, 15th) and Carson Bosse (220, 11th) rounded the wrestlers that took the mat for the Bulldogs.
Sandpoint finished sixth out of 10 teams with 99 points. Post Falls won the tourney with 295.5.
The varsity team returns to action on Wednesday when the Bulldogs host Kellogg at 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs recovered from a rough opening quarter to down the Hawks 48-37 and split the regular season series between the two Inland Empire League foes. The victory also puts Sandpoint in the driver's seat to grab the No. 1 seed to the 4A Region 1 tournament.

A win was within reach for Sandpoint boys basketball late in the third quarter of Tuesday's game, but a 12-2 run by St. Maries dashed those hopes.
