MISSOULA — Alex Germer hit six 3-pointers and scored 37 points Thursday as Missoula Sentinel held off Flathead 77-64 in the boys’ basketball opener for both teams.

Tony Frohlich-Fehr added 19 points for the Spartans, who won the battle of coaching debuts: Sentinel’s Jason Maki got the win thanks in part to a 12-3 surge that put his team up 54-42 midway through the third period.

First-year Flathead coach Dirk Johnsrud saw Joston Cripe score 16 of his team-high 24 points after intermission, as the Braves tried to close the gap. Back-to-back dunks by Germer, who was 12 of 26 from the floor, and Frohlich-Fehr helped keep the game out of reach.

Hunter Hickey added 13 points for Flathead, and Gabe Adams and Ethan VandenBosch scored nine each.
