PREP WRESTLING: Cd'A's Alyssa Randles wins at Rollie Lane; Post Falls boys third
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 4 years AGO
NAMPA — The lone champion from North Idaho at the 21st Rollie Lane Invitational came in the girls tournament.
Coeur d’Alene sophomore Alyssa Randles pinned Camilla Tew of West Side in the finals in 1:27 to win the 123-pound title at the Ford Sports Center.
“She just dominated everyone she wrestled and did a good job this weekend,” Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “She just eats and breathes wrestling. She just loves it and was great this weekend.”
Post Falls' boys, who have won the event four times, finished third on Saturday.
Meridian edged Kuna 226.2-221 to win its first Rollie Lane title since 2006. Kuna won last year’s title.
Post Falls, which won four straight Rollie Lane titles from 2015-18, was third with 144 points. The Trojans were second last year, and third in 2019.
Post Falls had no one in the finals, but had five placers. Roddy Romero (120), Ethan Miller (160) and Tyler Cook (220) were third, and Lane Reardon (145) and Isaiah Laguna (195) were fourth.
“Just some rough matches; we went 0 for (4) in the semifinals,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “We lost some close matches, but some tough matches. But the next round, those kids all bounced back (and won).”
Romero won his last six matches after losing in the second round.
Meridian last won a state title in 1987, and Kuna moved up this year after winning the 4A title last year. Post Falls has won five of the last sixth state 5A titles.
“They’re really tough, really loaded, which is going to be a great challenge for us,” Reardon said of Meridian and Kuna. “It isn’t out of reach; state is a different tournament (qualifying-wise). But we’ve got some work to do.”
Gunner Giulio was runner-up at 170 for Coeur d’Alene, which finished ninth with 111 points. Giulio fell 3-2 in the finals to Kuna’s Dante Roggio, who beat Giulio 6-5 in a dual on Thursday.
“It was really close between those two again,” Moffat said. “He gave up a takedown early, and then got one back. In the third period, Gunner went to go down and couldn’t get away. He was close, but just couldn’t get away. We’ll make some changes and hopefully get another crack at him.”
Coeur d'Alene's Drew Roberts, who advanced to the semifinals, was scratched with a knee injury on Saturday and finished sixth at 152.
“Drew woke up this morning and couldn’t move very well,” Moffat said. “He wanted to wrestle, but we wanted to err on the side of caution.”
Jackson Kohal was fifth at 285 for Coeur d’Alene, which hosts Lewiston on Wednesday.
“We lost a couple of tough matches that would have put some guys in placing matches,” Moffat said. “We saw some improvement from the younger guys, but we’ve got a ways to go. The season is early yet, and they’ll learn and get better.”
Sam Feusier (second at 285), Riley Siegford (third at 145) and Cooper Johnson (sixth at 160) placed for Lakeland, which finished eighth with 114.5 points.
“The kids overall wrestled really well,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “I’m happy with all of them.”
Feusier pinned Coeur d’Alene’s Jackson Kohal — who beat him in a dual Dec. 17 — in the semifinals to advance to the finals.
“Sam’s confidence is growing,” Edelblute said. “He changed some things on his footwork and was able to get through to the finals. He had a nice takedown and looked really dominant.”
Matthew Whitcomb (fourth at 182) and Zach Macdonald (fifth at 98) placed for Lake City, which finished 19th.
Whitcomb fell to Kaleb Smith of Meridian in the semifinals. Smith defeated Seth Nutting in the state 5A 170-pound championship in 2020.
“We knew coming into the weekend that would probably be the kid Matt would see and we’d have to beat him to get to the finals,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “We wanted the match, and got it. Matt wrestled hard and really tough, but just came up a little short. We’re going to take some things away from that and by the end of the year, we’ll be able to get him.”
Macdonald, a sophomore, trailed Eagle’s Wylie Stone 9-4 before catching him and earning a pin for fifth.
“We’re hoping this is a big confidence booster for him,” Owen said. “For him to place in a tournament this tough, it’s good to see. He ran into a buzzsaw in the semifinals. Every time he wrestles, he learns some new things and he definitely picked up some things each time he wrestled this weekend.”
Post Falls hosts the River City Duals on Friday and Saturday.
