SEATTLE (AP) — The Pacific Northwest is experiencing heavy rains, flooding and landslides, along with heavy snow and possible avalanches on Tuesday and Wednesday as an atmospheric river collides with Washington and Oregon.

The Snoqualmie River near Carnation, Washington, is expected to produce minor to moderate flooding by Wednesday. Metro areas including Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia could experience street flooding due to intense downpours, KOMO-TV reported.

By 11 a.m. Tuesday, Seattle and Olympia had set new rainfall records for the day with 1.34 inches in Seattle and 1.70 inches in Olympia, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.

The National Weather Service in Portland issued a flood watch for 10 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Wednesday. As the event continues people may see some vulnerable land break down and the integrity of some slopes weaken, KOIN reported.

The Nehalem River northwest of Portland near Foss was expected to reach flood stage by Tuesday afternoon and crest late tonight, the weather agency said. Minor flooding of lowlands near Mohler and Nehalem is expected.

Excessive rain is also leading to a sky-high threat for landslides like one in Poulsbo last week could become more common into Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Washington state Department of Transportation reported a landslide Tuesday blocking the northbound lane of US 101 west of Olympia near Artic. Crews were working to clear it by the end of the day, officials said.

Snow fell over the Northern Cascades overnight and into Tuesday before turning to rain as temperatures increased.

“For the Stevens Pass corridor, we’re looking at the avalanche trend increasing tonight with incoming snowfall,” said Harlan Sheppard, Washington State Department of Transportation Avalanche Forecaster and Control Technician.

Interstate 84 in Eastern Oregon closed eastbound near Pendleton and westbound in Baker City because of truck crashes on Tuesday, according to the state Department of Transportation. Officials said the freeway would likely remain closed for most of the afternoon and that icy conditions could be expected throughout the area.
