Zags Kispert, Suggs sweep WCC weekly honors

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Gonzaga's Corey Kispert and Jalen Suggs were named West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week.

Kispert earned the honor for the second time this season, while Suggs was selected Freshman of the Week for the fifth time. In the eight recognitions of the WCC Player of the Week so far this season, seven Zags have received the honor, including five different GU players. The exception came on Dec. 14, a week when GU did not play a game. A Bulldog player has received the freshman of the week honor six of the eight weeks.

Kispert totaled 40 points in a pair of wins for unbeaten No. 1 Gonzaga during the week. He made 12 of his 24 shots from the field, including nine of 17 from behind the arc. Against Pepperdine on Thursday, the senior made six 3-pointers and scored 23 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds. At Saint Mary’s on Saturday, Kispert led GU with 17 points, making three 3s.

Suggs scored 32 points on 13-of-25 shooting from the field. Suggs leads the West Coast Conference in steals per game (2.42), and is third in the conference averaging 4.67 assists per game.

Zags' Ejim named WCC women's Freshman of the Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Gonzaga freshman forward Yvonne Ejim was named West Coast Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week.

This is the second conference award recognition for Gonzaga this season; Jenn Wirth was selected as the Player of the Week on Jan. 11.

Ejim was instrumental in GU’s sweep of Santa Clara and San Francisco last week, averaging a season-best 8.5 points over the two-game span.

Against Santa Clara, Ejim came off the bench to score seven points in 16 minutes of play. In Saturday’s victory at San Francisco, Ejim scored a season-high 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting.
