Libby Volunteer Fire Department crews responded to a mobile home fire possibly sparked by an electrical failure Jan. 21.

Fire Marshal Steve Lauer said the call came into dispatch from the Libby Dam RV Park about 2:45 p.m. Three tenders, one engine and the department’s command center responded. Dispatchers also sent Libby Volunteer Ambulance to the scene. Lauer said no one was injured in the fire.

When firefighters arrived at the park, the flames shot up from underneath the trailer and were beginning to burn through the floor. Walking around the mobile home, Lauer said he saw heavy smoke coming from the back of the structure.

The plume could be seen rising above the trees along U.S. Highway 37 for at least 30 minutes after first responders arrived.

Later that evening, Lauer said firefighters were called back to the scene to address residual smoldering heat beneath the trailer. Responders used a little pressurized water to cool the area.

An inspection of the mobile home during the follow-up visit led firefighters to conclude the blaze was caused by an electrical circuit failure.

Patrick Welch, resident of the trailer and a Vietnam veteran, said he was inside his home when the fire started without warning. While he tried to put out the flames, his efforts fell short.

The fire took most of Welch’s possessions. Relatives are seeking help for the displaced veteran. Anyone who would like to make a donation can reach his family at 206-914-9534.
