To truly understand how the U.S. Constitution protects the American Dream, 11th-grader Isaiah Harrison uses rowing as an example.

Last Saturday, he infused the American Dream with a tale of a brick layer who wanted to participate in rowing regattas, and despite being barred from doing so because of his blue collar status, went on to win gold medals in the sport.

"Even in America, there's no class system," Isaiah's mom, Kristie Harrison of Coeur d'Alene, said Tuesday. "He mentioned how in the Constitution, it protects anybody, and through hard work and determination, they can achieve the American Dream."

Isaiah, a Trinity Home Educators student, won first place in the American Legion Oratorical Contest, held in the Steven H. Nipp Post 143 in Post Falls last Saturday.

In second place was Tescelin LaVe’ of Immaculate Conception Academy. His younger brother, Brendan LaVe’ of Immaculate Conception Academy, placed third.

"My personal thoughts were one of pride in these young people and their ability to talk about the Constitution and Bill of Rights and present their case," Post 143 Adjutant and event co-organizer Tim Shaw said. "Simply an amazing few hours where we can re-invigorate pride in our youth and be confident that our future leaders are on the right path."

Isaiah won a medal and a $100 scholarship from the American Legion, but it's just the beginning of possible scholarships available if he participates in the regional competition in Lewiston on Feb. 6.

The winner of the regional competition will advance to the state contest in Boise. The national finals will be held April 9 through 11 in Indianapolis.
