Winter food distribution event announced

I grew up in the Tri-Cities, Wash., and have always loved to write. I attended the University of Washington, where I earned a double major in journalism and political science, with an area of emphasis in history. I am the fifth out of six kids — don't believe any of the stories that my siblings tell. To be able to tell others stories and take photos for a living is a dream come true — and I considered myself blessed to be a community journalist. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking and spending time outdoors, genealogy, reading, and watching the UW Huskies and the Seattle Seahawks. I am a servant to my cat, Frankie, who yes, will eat anything and everything in sight … even wedding cookies. | January 27, 2021 1:00 AM

It may be winter, but those who are hungry still need a helping hand.

That was why, when the chance came to hold its first-ever food distribution event, Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church officials didn't hesitate.

The event is planned for Friday, Jan. 29, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. — or until supplies run out. The free food distribution event will take place in the church's parking lot, 1900 Pine St., across from the YMCA.

"From what we have learned, the need goes up during the winter months, especially after the holidays,"said Kessin Drews of Christ Our Redeemer. "And the availability is lower across the board for help and resources."

While she joked that she questioned their sanity due to the potential for winter weather, Drews said hardy volunteers have stepped up to help serve the community.

"We hope to reach as many people as possible since this is so outside the normal timing of when these events are usually held," Drews said.

For the event, Christ Our Redeemer is again partnering with 2nd Harvest of Spokane to bring its first-ever winter emergency food distribution to the area on Friday, January 29th  from 11-1, or until supplies run out.  The event will be held in the parking lot of the church, rain, snow or shine!  Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church is located at 1900 Pine Street in Sandpoint, across the street from the YMCA.

Last year, Christ Our Redeemer launched its new “drive-thru” format for the distribution.

"This was very successful in getting the food to those who need it while minimizing exposure to those who attend and volunteers," Drews said.

Participants are asked to enter through the Lincoln Avenue side of the parking lot and exit right onto Pine Street. Guests are asked not to arrive before 11 a.m., as it causes traffic and safety concerns.

"During this time of financial strain and food insecurity for many, the event will bring free food to those in need within the community," Drews said. "Additional safety and sanitation steps are being taken by both staff and volunteers to ensure the risk is minimal to all who attend."

Recipients will not be asked to sign in or show any documentation. They simply need to drive up to receive groceries.

Unless supplies change, the expected distribution will include beef, produce, pantry items, bread, and more.

The church is encouraging everyone to help spread the word to those who may be facing challenges feeding their families during this time.
